About this grant

Supports innovative research and treatment approaches for non-cancer pediatric rare diseases through a competitive, peer-reviewed grant process. Funded projects may focus on reducing mortality and morbidity, improving screening accuracy, establishing research consortia, discovery science, bioinformatics, genomics, medical imaging, or equipment acquisition. Awards are made to Florida-based universities and established research institutes.

Consortium grants up to $500,000 for up to 36 months
Discovery Science grants up to $500,000 for up to 36 months
High-Risk, High-Reward Discovery Science grants up to $300,000 for up to 36 months
Equipment grants up to $100,000 for up to 12 months
Indirect costs up to 15% of total direct costs allowed
Domestic travel reimbursement at Florida state rates

Online application submitted via Biomedical Research Section portal
Letter of Intent (required, due October 26, 2026)
Work plan with identified milestones for the entire project timeframe
Budget forms using Biomedical Research Section's approved budget form
Budget narrative justifying all costs
Letter of commitment from all collaborating organizations (for Consortium category)
Letter of commitment from each consultant
Institutional approvals (IRB, IACUC, IBC, RSC as applicable)

Eligibility

Applicant must be a Florida-based university or established research institute
All grant-funded activities must take place in Florida
Principal Investigator must be an employee of the applicant institution
Principal Investigator must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
Proposed research project must focus on a non-cancer pediatric rare disease
Projects must not have scientific, financial, or commitment overlap with other funded projects
Letter of Intent must be submitted by October 26, 2026 (required for eligibility)
Subcontracts must be pre-approved in the Biomedical Research Section's budget form
