About this grant

Provides competitive funding for bold, high-impact AI research projects that use artificial intelligence to improve the lives of Utahns across health, environment, bioinnovation, autonomous systems, and other areas. Projects must be led by a Utah institution of higher education and include a substantive academic-industry partnership. Three funding tiers are available: Moonshot Awards, Pathfinder Grants, and Spark Grants.

What you get

Moonshot Awards: up to $1,000,000 for 18–24 months (4 awards)
Pathfinder Grants: $200,000 for 12 months (4 awards)
Spark Grants: $50,000 for 6–9 months (4 awards)
Independent scholarly review by faculty panel
Public announcement at Pro Human Utah AI Summit (December 8, 2026)

How to apply

Cover page (use provided template)
Executive summary / vision (1 page max)
Team roster and approach (2 pages max + letters of collaboration and support)
Technical narrative with go/no-go milestones (3 pages max)
Timeline, milestones, and deliverables (2 pages max)
Expected impact statement — economic and social (1 page max)
Pro-human design statement (1 page)
Budget and justification (2 pages max, direct costs only, no F&A)

Eligibility

Lead applicant must be a Utah institution of higher education
Proposals must include at least one Utah academic institution and at least one non-academic partner
Non-academic partner must have a substantive, documented role (funding, in-kind effort, data, or deployment channel)
Letters of commitment required from partners
Proposals must be reviewed and prioritized by the President of the lead institution
Only sponsored project offices will have access to the submission portal
One lead role per PI per tier (participation as partner on additional proposals permitted)
Project outcome must primarily benefit Utah
