About this grant

Supports cancer research, tobacco-related biomedical research, and pediatric cancer research through competitive, peer-reviewed grants awarded to Florida-based universities and established research institutes. Funded programs include the Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research Program, the James and Esther King Biomedical Research Program (tobacco-related diseases, cardiovascular, stroke, and pulmonary disease), and the Live Like Bella Pediatric Cancer Research Initiative. Research areas include prevention and treatment, clinical trials, discovery science, emerging therapeutics, research infrastructure, and technology transfer.

Letter of Intent (LOI) due August 26, 2026

Work plan with identified milestones for the entire project time frame
Budget forms (direct and indirect costs)
Identification of one principal investigator (PI)
Peer-review summary statement (Bridge grant applicants)
Patent and literature search documentation (Technology Transfer Feasibility applicants)
Scientific advisory process description involving researchers from at least four Florida-based universities and/or established research institutes (Research Infrastructure applicants)

Eligibility

Applicant must be a Florida-based university or established research institute
Must identify one corresponding principal investigator (PI) for each project proposal
New Investigator Research applicants must have been full-time faculty for no more than six years and must work under mentorship of a senior investigator
Bridge grant applicants must have submitted a multi-year investigator-initiated research application to a federal agency and received a peer-review summary statement indicating high scientific merit
No more than 18 months may pass between receiving a federal funding decision and submission of a Bridge application
Organizations may only be the lead on one Research Infrastructure application
Multicenter Clinical Trials (Bella Initiative) must involve investigators from at least two distinct research/clinical facilities in Florida and be implemented in two or more Florida locations
Technology Transfer Feasibility projects must have technology/invention that is protected or patentable and at proof-of-concept stage
