About this grant

Supports research studies that examine strategies to improve the use of research evidence in ways that benefit young people ages 5-25 in the United States. Funded studies build or test strategies to improve the use of existing research in policy or practice, and test whether improving research use leads to better decision-making and youth outcomes. The program welcomes proposals from a range of disciplines and methods, including experimental, observational, and mixed-methods designs.

Major Research Grants: $100,000–$1,000,000 over 2–4 years, including up to 15% indirect costs
Officers' Research Grants: $25,000–$50,000 over 1–2 years, including up to 15% indirect costs
Opportunities to connect with scholars, policymakers, and practitioners
Access to learning communities for peer discussion, advice, and collaboration

How to apply

Letter of inquiry (functions as a mini-proposal)
Full proposal (by invitation only for Major Research Grants; Officers' grants awarded on LOI merit alone)
Description of research design, methods, and analysis plan
Staffing plan and budget narrative
Team track record and prior publications
Operational definition of research evidence use for the proposed project

Eligibility

Applicant must be a tax-exempt organization; grants are not made to individuals
Study must align with the program's stated research interests on improving use of research evidence
Study must relate to outcomes of young people between ages 5 and 25 in the United States
Principal Investigator may submit only one application per cycle
Studies must examine a strategy to improve research use, not solely understand how individuals access or make sense of research
Studies must not focus solely on improving data-driven decision-making
Studies must not focus solely on improving research use among frontline practitioners at the point of service
