This fellowship offers three tracks—Institutional, Individual, and Emerging Technology—for individuals or teams aiming to build innovative, open-source tools, resources, or products that benefit journalists and newsrooms. Open to applicants worldwide and from any background, the 8-month remote fellowship provides a $75,000 stipend (or $100,000 for Emerging Technology projects), paid in installments based on deliverables. Fellows are expected to build, test, and launch their project, which must be free and accessible to the journalism community. The program includes support and opportunities to share learnings through public deliverables.
Eligibility requirements
Open to anyone, anywhere in the world
No specific age, background, or journalism experience required
Project must result in a free, accessible, open-source resource, tool, or product for journalists/newsrooms
Fellowship can be completed remotely with a few required visits to RJI (travel covered)
Project must be built, tested, and launched within the 8-month fellowship period
