About this opportunity
This grant provides $4,000 to non-profit grassroots organizations and Indigenous communities in the U.S. and Canada that are directly impacted by mining. The program prioritizes Indigenous-led groups and projects addressing hard rock/mineral/metals mining issues, including legacy and abandoned mines. Funding supports project-specific needs such as technical assistance, organizing, outreach, and more, but excludes general operating expenses and most staff salaries. Applications are accepted three times a year, with emergency grants available between cycles. Applicants must submit a project proposal and, if previously funded, a grant report before reapplying.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants must be non-profit grassroots communities or organizations directly affected by mining in the U.S. or Canada.
Priority given to Tribal/First Nations/Indigenous communities and non-profit community-based grassroots groups.
Regional or national organizations in the U.S. and Canada working on mining-specific issues are eligible.
Organizational or mining-specific program budget must be under $75,000 USD for priority consideration.
Individuals are not eligible; must apply as an organization or with a fiscal sponsor.
Project must address hard rock/mineral/metals mining issues (e.g., gold, silver, iron, copper, zinc, nickel, tin, lead, uranium, placer, coal, legacy, closed, or abandoned mines).
Proposals related to oil, gas, pipelines, fracking, tar sands, aggregates, quarries, gravel, sand, or cement are not eligible.
Work or organizations outside the U.S. and Canada are not eligible.
General operating expenses (rent, utilities, etc.) and staff salaries above 10% of the grant amount are not eligible.

If no tax ID or bank account, fiscal sponsorship required.
Grant report required within 12 months of receiving funds, answering outcomes and financials questions.
